Mayor's Comments September 2, 2013

The Council and staff of the Town of Bancroft proudly uphold the Human
Rights Code of Canada.

In 2012 Council passed a proclamation to mark 50 years since the Ontario
Human Rights Code and I remind you of the following:

"Every person has the right to be free from discrimination and harassment
and to reach their full potential-no matter their race, ethnic origin,
place of birth, religion, ability level, sex, gender identify, sexual
orientation, or any other status. Council supports a community of mutual
respect and belonging by supporting an equitable environment where
everyone is included in work and services and able to enjoy the benefits
of their community without tension and conflict."

Council are deeply saddened that our town has negatively been affected by
what has recently taken place.

The simple truth is that intolerant and hurtful expressions towards
individual rights are not considered free speech. The town and every
person have a critical role in nurturing human rights and equitable
environments. I ask each and every citizen to think of how you are able to
contribute.

Bancroft  endorses an Integrated Community Sustainability Plan that was
completed through community engagement and one of the values identified in
the ICSP is that "We value diversity and work to build an inclusive,
cohesive community." Council embraces that value for our town.

MEDIA RELEASE – August 16, 2013

The Town of Bancroft has received numerous calls from residents regarding companies going door to door that have implied an association with the Town regarding water quality testing and sales of in home water treatment systems and some have also claimed to be inspecting watermains and services.  The Town of Bancroft has no affiliation with any of these companies and the only organization that is a representative of the Town is the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) and any testing conducted by OCWA is for the confirmation of water quality purposes only.

We encourage residents to be aware of these organizations.

MEDIA RELEASE COUNCIL FILLS VACANT SEAT

Town Council has unanimously appointed John Kirby to fill the vacant Council position following the passing of Councillor Steve Bruce in June.

Provincial legislation requires that Council either appoint or call a by-election within 60 days of a vacancy occurring.  Mayor Bernice Jenkins stated “Considering the cost of the election and because we are in the last half of our term, we decided to appoint a new Councillor. This is a unique position for Council as it is normally the job of our citizens to decide who sits at the Council table to represent them. We took this responsibility very seriously. The criteria in making this appointment were: the person must be a Dungannon resident, someone known to Council, proven interest in the community, history of volunteering and a sense of Council protocol. I am delighted to welcome John to our table”.

John Kirby’s community involvement includes: volunteering for the Art Gallery of Bancroft since 2001 and a Director since 2006, Board member of the Community Futures Development Corporation for the past 10 years (he recently resigned as secretary due to this appointment), and past municipal appointee to the Quinte Health Care volunteer committee.

Prior to retirement in 2001, Mr. Kirby was a technical sales and marketing representative, specializing in international business. John and his wife Carol live in Dungannon ward and have attended Council meetings on a regular basis.
